Learning is a creative and multidisciplinary venture in the StFX Engineering Department. Here, the history of civilization and the history of engineering are one in the same and faculty have structured the program around that very idea.
Small classrooms and a close-knit atmosphere ensure you graduate with the best possible education – one that allows you to compete for jobs and graduate study opportunities all over the world. With dedicated and talented faculty and some of the most contemporary facilities in the country, it’s no surprise that many StFX engineering students go on to successful, rewarding careers.
As a first-year engineering student, calculus, physics, chemistry, two engineering science courses, and a writing course are all mandatory components. First year enrolment is limited to about 60-65 students, and some classes and labs have between 20 to 40 students to create a comfortable learning environment.
Engineers pursue careers in design and maintenance of public works for government agencies, or the day-to-day operation of large corporations, including structural advisory roles, and the development of equipment.
Upon satisfactory completion of industry examinations leading to a Professional Engineering designation (P.Eng.), students find success over a wide range of careers in chemical, civil, electrical, environmental, industrial, mechanical, and mining resource engineering.
StFX offers:
* A two-year Diploma in Engineering
* A three-year Diploma in Engineering (the same courses spread over three years: four 3-credit courses per term instead of six for the two-year diploma)
* A combination Diploma in Engineering and B.Sc. in physics
StFX Engineering graduates acquire the tools they need to complete a Bachelor of Engineering degree – conferred by the Faculty of Engineering at Dalhousie University in Halifax.
