Truth And Reconciliation

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada

There is an emerging and compelling desire to put the events of the past behind us so that we can work towards a stronger and healthier future. The truth-telling and reconciliation process as part of an overall holistic and comprehensive response to the Indian Residential School legacy is a sincere indication and acknowledgment of the injustices and harms experienced by Aboriginal people and the need for continued healing. This is a profound commitment to establishing new relationships embedded in mutual recognition and respect that will forge a brighter future. The truth of our common experiences will help set our spirits free and pave the way to reconciliation.

The Commission was officially established on June 1, 2008, with the purpose of documenting the history and lasting impacts of the Canadian Residential Schools on students and their families. It provided residential school survivors an opportunity to share their experiences during public and private meetings held across the country. The TRC emphasizes that it has a priority of displaying the impacts of the residential schools to the Canadians who have been kept in the dark from these matters.

Through the Agreement, the Parties have agreed that a historic Truth and Reconciliation Commission will be established to contribute to truth, healing, and reconciliation.
