StFX faculty continue to make important contributions to society through their research efforts. Most recently, eight StFX researchers were successful recipients in the latest round of funding awards from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).
At StFX, successful SSHRC grant recipients include Dr. Kailin Wright, Dr, Katelynn Carter-Roger, Dr. L. Jane McMillan, Dr. Margo Watt, Dr. Mary Oxner, Dr. Dan Robinson, Dr. William Walters and Dr. Sutapa Chattopadhyay.
Additionally, Dr. Patrick Withey, Dr. Laua Estill and Dr. Wright were co-applicants on successfully funded SSHRC projects led by others.
This announcement was made recently as part of a series of major investments in science and research by the Honourable Randy Boissonnault, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Official Languages on behalf of the Honourable Francois-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science, and Industry and the Honourable Mark Holland, Minister of Health.
These new SSHRC research grants involving StFX faculty continues a track record of success across many different funding opportunities according to Dr. Richard Isnor, Associate Vice President, Research, Graduate & Professional Studies. “It’s fantastic to see our researchers succeed in all of the different research programs offered by SSHRC. The success of StFX researchers collaborating with researchers at other universities is also rewarding. These are important projects involving researchers from many disciplines and three of our four faculties, several of whom scored in the top sextile of their competitions.”

SSHRC Insight Grant
• Dr. Kailin Wright, English, $83,400 (over five years) for the project “No Mother, No Nation: Performing Reproductive Justice and the Future.
SSHRC Partnership Engage Grants
These are one year grants, linking a researcher or team of researchers with an eligible partner organization to bring research and scholarly expertise to addressing an issue, challenge, problem, or opportunity identified by the partner.
• Dr. Katelynn Carter-Rogers, Management and Enterprise Systems, Dr. L. Jane McMillan, Anthropology, and Dr. Margo Watt, Psychology, (with Dr. Shelley Price, University of Victoria), $24,925, for “Advancing Section 81 in Atlantic Canada: Identifying Rehabilitation Barriers for Incarcerated Indigenous Women.” Partner: Elizabeth Fry Society, Cape Breton.
• Dr. Mary Oxner, Accounting and Finance, $24,825, for “Supporting Young Indigenous Women Entrepreneurs in Atlantic Canada.” Partner: Atlantic Policy Congress of First Nations Chiefs.
• Dr. Dan Robinson, Education, and William Walters, Education, (with Dr. Nathan Hall, Brock University), $24,905 for “(Physical) Literacy in Mi'kmaw Kina'matnewey (MK): An Initial Determination of Mi'kmaw Students' Physical Literacy using the CAPL-2.”
• Dr. Sutapa Chattopadhyay, Development Studies Program, $23,475, for “To the frontiers of Mayan women’s food producing initiatives in Belize.” Partner: Maya Leaders Alliance
