Four StFX hockey student-athletes are set to begin competition at the FISU World University Games in Lake Placid, NY this week as members of Team Canada.
X-Women forwards Maggy Burbidge and Lea MacLeod, along with X-Men forwards Liam Hawel and Matthew Struthers were selected as members of their respective U SPORTS all-star teams for the Games.
Lea MacLeod, a fifth year business student from Dartmouth, NS, notes, "I am super excited to have the opportunity to represent Canada. I can't wait to meet new athletes and play with girls across the country. It's awesome to be able to share this experience with Maggy, and we will hopefully bring back the gold to StFX."
Likewise, second year business student Matthew Struthers, a native of Milton, ON stated that he is very excited to be chosen to represent Team Canada. "I was fortunate enough to win a gold medal at the U-17 Challenge, and I am hoping to replicate that success here at the FISU Games. I am looking forward to representing not only Canada but StFX as well. It should be a great experience and I can't wait to get started with the first game."
The first competition will take place on Wednesday with the Canadian women's hockey team opening its tournament against Slovakia at 9 p.m. AST. The Canadian men's team will open up against Ukraine on Thursday, January 12 at 1 p.m. AST. The opening ceremony will also be held on January 12.
Both teams will compete in five round robin games, taking them through until January 18, then semifinals and championship games will follow. The women's gold medal game is slated for January 21 at 9:30 p.m. AST with the men's gold medal game taking place the following day, January 22 at 6 p.m. AST.
